Studies have found that about 90% of what is taught in classrooms is forgotten within hours or a few days later. Therefore, this strategy consists in making sure that every student does not leave the classroom without describing in a sentence or two what he/she learned that day. Students are given a post-it-note and they will stick it on the door, or on a poster board previously placed by the door. The note has to be labeled with the student's name to provide credit for their participation. It can be done during the last five minutes of class, right before the bell announces the end of the period.
This activity seems unattractive and irrelevant for some children and adolescents, but it actually has proven to help students of ALL educational levels to reaffirm the big ideas, and retain them in their brain for future reference. It stimulates the short term memory skill while it helps student reflect and sink important concepts taught that day.
