Think-Pair-Share
Description:
This is a great co-operative strategy that works well in small groups, pairs or as a whole class dynamic activity. This activity consists in sharing ideas, reflections, and thoughts by activating prior knowledge, brainstorming and reflecting after a lecture or reading activity. During the beginning of a new unit, students are encouraged to respond questions that make them think and access prior knowledge and help the build stronger oral communications skills while sharing their knowledge. Educators are to monitor the duration of the activity with a timer to ensure the task is not too long or too short to avoid distractions and the occurrence of challenging behaviors.
Application
This strategy can be implemented in every subject and at any grade level. The purpose is to have students develop critical thinking skills while understanding and analyzing controversial topics. Each individual has a responsibility in the completion of the task. The final product is to express their reflections in writing and orally to the whole class.
